School Outreach Programs
"Stuffee"
Focusing on health, nutrition and the systems of the body, this one hour
program uses "Stuffee," a seven foot doll created by the
Pittsburgh Children's Museum. Stuffee unzips to reveal soft-sculpture
organs of the
digestive, respiratory and circulatory system. Children participating
in the program get to handle Stuffee's organs, listen to a heartbeat,
and do pre and post visit activities sent to them by the Museum. The
cost
of Stuffee is $75 per program, plus travel costs. It is appropriate for
students in pre-k - 5th grade. A maximum of 30 children per program,
3
programs per day. Programs must be booked at least 3 weeks in advance.
City by Design
This is a city planning and development program where students learn the four
zoning areas of a city, design their own model building using recycled materials,
and learn to identify the facilities, goods and services needed for a livable
city. The cost per program is $120 plus travel costs. It is appropriate for
students in 1st grade and up. This program can accommodate 30 children per
program, with a maximum of two programs per day. Each program is 2 hours, and
must be booked at least 3 weeks in advance.
Lasting Impressions
This program focuses on New York State
history and the different types of fossils that can be found throughout the state. By observing and handling real and reproduction fossils students will begin to understand how fossils are formed and what they can teach us about the past. Please phone for the cost of Lasting Impressions, plus travel costs. It is appropriate for students in 2nd through 6th grade. A maximum of 30 children per program, 2 programs per day. Each program is approximately 1 i/2 to 2 hours long.The cost per program is $100 plus off-site travel fees. Programs must be booked at least 3 weeks in advance.
In-House Programs
Tuesdays for Tots
Each week consists of 4 thematic activities for children age 5 and under. Some past themes have included "Music Day", "Texture Day", and "Teddy Bear Day". The program is free with Museum admission.
Alphabet Soup
During this hour long program children learn about a new letter each week. Children participating will make collages, read books, and do other activities centered around the letter of the day. This program is appropriate for children 5 and under and is free with Museum admission.
Story Art
During this half hour program children will listen to a story and then create a related art project to take home. This program is appropriate for all ages and is free with Museum admission.
Girl Scout Badge Programs
A 2 hour program that can be scheduled after school or on the weekends, each program gives either Brownies or Juniors the chance to earn a particular badge. Some of the badges done for Brownies include: "Stitch It Together", "Art to Wear", and "Science Wonders". Some of the badges for Juniors include: "Visual Arts", "Prints and Graphics", and "Jeweler". The cost is $10 per scout, and includes all materials. badge, Museum admission. Pre-registration is required, and a 50% deposit is due on registration. Chaperones are free of charge, but one is required to attend for every five scouts. There can be a maximum of 30 girls per program.
Girl Scout Overnight Program
Just like the badge program, overnights let troops work on and earn a
particular badge. In this program, troops have the opportunity to
spend
the night at the Museum. The cost is $25 per scout, and includes dinner,
all
materials, badge, Museum admission, and breakfast in the morning. The overnight runs from
6:30 pm on Saturday to 8 am on Sunday. Pre-registration is required and a 50% deposit is due upon registration.
School Vacation Workshops
When Saratoga Springs City Schools is on an extended vacation (i.e. Spring Break, Winter Break), the
Children's Museum offers workshops Monday through Friday. These workshops occur
at 1 pm. They are for children ages 5 and up and consist of art or science
projects the children can take home with them. See schedule for details.
